The Family Space

The Family Space is a playful learning hub where children and their families can freely discover an abundance of books, toys, and manipulatives that spark learning opportunities and cross-generational communication.

Book Boxes are colorful, outdoor book hubs placed in community settings that families frequent. They are filled with dozens of books in English and Spanish for children of all ages; engaging titles that children and families can choose to take home and build their own home libraries.

Community Bookshelves

Community bookshelves are located in banks, hospitals, doctor's offices, and other places families frequent. They are filled with dozens of new and gently used, culturally inclusive children’s books for families to take home and keep forever.

Laundromats

Book Harvest partners with laundromats to maintain cozy reading corners filled with books and activities to encourage parent-child engagement. The bookshelves are filled with culturally diverse books free for the taking.

Book Babies

Beginning when a baby is born, Book Babies partners with families of Medicaid-eligible children to provide resources, skills, and support to optimize their child's early language and literacy skills. If you have a newborn that is Medicaid eligible, younger than 15 weeks, and lives in Durham County, you might be able to enroll your baby!

If you're in Durham, our Grab & Go Book Bins are your best option! They are filled with free children's books and you can take as many as you'd like. Info is below. We also have several Book Boxes located around Durham County (see all locations below).

Grab & Go Bins

Select books from our Grab & Go book bins at 2501 University Drive in Durham! Book Harvest Grab & Go book bins are filled with books for children of all ages; they are free and you can take as many as you'd like.

The books in the bins are gently-used children's books that have some cosmetic flaws, but they are still perfectly usable!

Examples of books you might find in our Grab & Go book bins include:

Discarded library books
Books with minor creasing and/or tears
Books missing their dust jackets
Books with light inscriptions or annotations
Activity books, workbooks, and coloring books

Books on Break

Book Harvest’s Books on Break program partners with school districts and organizations to enable PreK and elementary school students to select ten brand new books to take home and keep forever, right before summer break.

Students select brand new books from a wide array of diverse and high-interest titles in both English and Spanish.

Are you a community leader requesting books for an event or special occasion?

Book Harvest often provides information and/or free children's books at events located throughout the Triangle (Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh). If you'd like to have Book Harvest participate in your community event, there is a simple form to fill out.
