A letter to our community from the Book Harvest staff/Una carta a nuestra comunidad del personal de

Dear Friends,

We write to you today in solidarity and with grave concern — acknowledging that our country, our community, and our very souls are hurting.

The murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and so many others, and episodes of police violence across our country, leave us reeling and furious. They are yet another assault on our Black brothers and sisters — already disproportionately affected by the devastating impact of COVID-19. Many families and children in our community are suffering because of inadequate healthcare, the digital divide, financial hardships, and unprecedented school closures.

We bear witness to the entrenched and malevolent history of racism in our country — never resolved, and rarely more exposed.

As an organization, we acknowledge that:

  1. Our fellow humans are suffering and traumatized — and that is not acceptable.

  2. Our world is in a moral crisis. We must speak up, and we will act.

  3. We need to listen deeply and with humility to those most affected in our community.

Our hearts and minds are with everyone who is enduring racial injustice. NOW is the moment for all of us, together, to shoulder the responsibility for dismantling systems that are built on generations of inequality and centuries of oppression.

As we at Book Harvest strive to realize a world in which reading, learning, and access to information are considered rights, not privileges, we recommit ourselves to work fiercely for justice and equality, and to build a beloved community in which love and safety are the norm, and in which peace and compassion thrive.

Queridos amigos,
