How does Books on Break work?
Did you know that kids maintain—and even increase!—their reading skills over the summer when they have home libraries filled with books they love? That’s why Book Harvest’s Books on Break program is working to create the summer that all students deserve!
Before summer starts, students get to pick 10 brand-new FREE books to take home and keep forever! There are all kinds of books to choose from—adventure stories, nonfiction, picture books, and even bilingual books in English and Spanish. They get to build their very own home library!
The Books on Break program brings everything needed right to the school—new books, colorful string backpacks, and more! It’s made possible thanks to a partnership between Book Harvest and school districts, plus support from local literacy champions!
With Books on Break, kids keep reading all summer, stay connected to school, and get ready to jump back into learning in the fall. How cool is that?
Books on Break 2025 will take place in 9 counties across North Carolina in partnership with the following:
Burke County Public Schools
Haywood County Schools
Granville County Public Schools
Lexington City Schools
Carolina Community Academy
Williams YMCA of Avery County
Person County Schools
Woodfin Elementary School (Buncombe County Schools)
Bladen County Schools
Durham Public Schools
