El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), commonly known as Día, is a celebration every day of children, families, and reading that culminates yearly at the end of April.
Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages and cultures. The common goals of all Día programming are to:
Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories and libraries.
Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child’s home language and culture.
Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies.
Recognize and respect culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.
For the second year in a row, Book Harvest will join our friends at the Durham County Library to put on a huge Día celebration at Northgate Mall on April 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event includes opportunities for children and families to play with robots, make crafts, watch dance performances from around the world…and of course, to take home lots of free books they’ve chosen for themselves. But we need YOU to help us make it happen!
Can you spare an hour on Saturday, April 28 to help? We need volunteers to help with setup, registration, book selection, and breakdown. This is a great opportunity for families to serve together, for teens (ages 16 and older) to complete required service hours, or for anyone who loves books to help share #bookjoy with lots and lots and LOTS of children! Email Community Partnerships Manager Daniele Berman today if you can help: daniele@bookharvestnc.org.
