“Hawbridge Helpers” Lend a Helping Hand

By Grace Baucom and Sarah Mock, Hawbridge Helpers Co-Chairs

The Hawbridge School is a small, unique charter school in Saxapahaw with 312 students in grades 5-12. Hawbridge Helpers is a club at Hawbridge devoted to volunteer work and service – aka doing amazing things to help others! We lead projects that rally community involvement in our school and beyond and help out in any way we can. Hawbridge Helpers includes over thirty fantastic 6-12th graders and is led by two students, Sarah Mock (12th grade) and Grace Baucom (10th grade). Jennifer Shelton is the faculty advisor.

We started the 2015-2016 school year off strong with a Book Harvest Drive. Grace Baucom volunteered with Book Harvest earlier in 2015 and fell in love with their commitment to giving children the world of opportunity that comes with a book. She presented the idea of running a book drive to the club, and we all worked together to make it happen. Flyers were hung, emails were sent, and the books started flooding in. Our collection ran from October 1st until the 22nd. We started our drive with one collection bin on the first floor and another on the second, but it soon became clear that just one bin on each floor wasn’t going to cut it! More and more boxes appeared at our donation sites, all stuffed to the brim with books. And we could not have been more thrilled! In just three weeks, we collected 857 books! Sarah Mock, along with other Hawbridge Helpers, counted up the grand total, and Grace Baucom delivered them to Book Harvest on Monday, October 26th, where they were greeted with open arms and big smiles. Book Harvest’s mission is to give every child a book, and the Hawbridge School could not be more proud to support that mission and be even a small part of the amazing things they are doing.
