Hearts & History: Celebrating Black History Month Through Books

Stories connect us. They teach us about resilience, joy, and the limitless possibilities of the future. This Black History Month, we invite you to explore, learn, and celebrate through books. Because every page turned is a step forward in understanding, appreciation, and love.

For parent DeAnna Vincent, Black History Month is "everything—learning about the past,

dreaming about the future, and fostering love for others." Another parent, Della Pete, sees it as "learning more about our culture and what African American people have done for us." Their words remind us of the power of stories—how they shape our understanding, connect us to our roots, and fuel our aspirations.

This Black History Month, Book Harvest is celebrating in a big way! On Saturday, February 22, from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, join us at the Book Harvest Family Space (2501 University Dr, Durham, NC) for an afternoon of joy, learning, and community.

Featured Five: Books That Celebrate Love & Black History

This month, we’re shining a light on five incredible children's books that celebrate both love and Black history—because love is at the heart of every great story.

  1. You Come from Greatness: A Celebration of Black History by Sara Chinakwe & Ken Daley

  2. What Love Looks Like by Laura Obuobi & Anna Cunha

  3. Soul Step by Jewell Parker Rhodes, Kelly McWilliams & Briana Mukodiri Uchendu

  4. There Was a Party for Langston by Jason Reynolds & Jerome Pumphrey

  5. Big by Vashti Harrison

Each of these books offers a unique lens into Black history, identity, and the love that binds us all. Whether through poetry, art, or powerful storytelling, they remind us of the beauty in our heritage and the strength of our dreams. You can view them on our wishlist.
