A Birthday Tradition That Keeps on Giving
Since January 2020, Book Harvest has had the joy of celebrating Hendrix’s birthday in a truly special way. You’ve probably seen his smiling face on some of our materials—Hendrix, a young Durham resident, has been part of the Book Harvest story since he was a baby. His parents, Lindsey and Gary, started a book drive in honor of his first birthday, ensuring that other children could experience the same joy of books that Hendrix has. (You can read Lindsey’s powerful 2020 blog post about their journey with books from birth!)
Three years ago, little brother Maxwell joined the family, and their tradition grew even stronger! Every year, their birthday book drive has grown, collecting more books than the year before:
When Hendrix turned one: 165 books
When Hendrix turned two: 389 books
When Hendrix turned three: 913 books
When Hendrix and Maxwell turned four and one: 1,042 books
When Hendrix and Maxwell turned five and two: 1,171 books
And this year? In January 2025, to celebrate Hendrix turning six and Maxwell turning three, they collected an incredible 1,452 books!
In total, this amazing family has donated 5,132 children’s books—bringing the joy of reading to thousands of young readers.
Lindsey, Gary, Hendrix, and Maxwell: we are in awe of your generosity and so grateful for your commitment to sharing the gift of books. Thank you for making birthdays brighter—not just for your family, but for so many others!
