Book Harvest now has a second location in Durham! We are thrilled to share the news that we are expanding to The W.G. Pearson Center in addition to our Rockwood Shopping Center headquarters.
In 2017, in partnership with the Durham Public Schools, Durham County, and Self-Help Credit Union, Student U became the master tenant of The Center and is now welcoming partners into the newly renovated building. We are honored and delighted to be among this first cohort of partners.
We love our popular storefront in Durham – but when we received the invitation to expand our footprint in Durham by joining other like-minded youth-focused groups to dream fearlessly for a future of equity, respect, opportunity, and possibility for every child in our midst, we knew the time had come to add a second location. The generosity and vision of Student U, a leader among these programs, has wholly transformed the venerable W.G. Pearson Center in Durham’s Hayti neighborhood to create a magnificent shared space.
This fall, Book Harvest will move into the glorious sun-filled library of this former school; this is where our Book Babies and Books on Break programs will settle into their new home, a place where neighborhood families will join together and where community programs will take place. We are thrilled about this opportunity.
And as we look to the future, it is important to take a moment to honor the past: for almost a century, The W.G. Pearson Center has been a place for Durham youth to learn and thrive. William Gaston Pearson spent his lifetime advocating for the rights of African-American students and working to increase opportunities for those around him. The building named for him will continue to house his value of education, fierce belief in all students, and hope of a better Durham.
Individually, we and the other W.G. Pearson partners will continue working to realize the society our children deserve. Together, we will form a consortium that shares best practices and advocates for policies and investments to enhance systems which enable all people to thrive.
