Hi everyone! My name is Rachel Zawadzki, and I am thrilled to be an intern at Book Harvest this summer! I just finished my second year at UNC Chapel Hill, and am currently pursuing bachelor’s degrees in both Comparative Literature and Spanish. At UNC, I am heavily involved in the Campus Y, UNC’s center for social justice. When I found this internship opportunity with Book Harvest, I realized that it combined two of my main passions–literature and social justice.
One of the things that excites me most about Book Harvest is how encouraging it is towards young readers, giving them tools to continue to learn and grow. In my short time (about a week) here, I’ve already gotten the chance to see the impact of books on children through the Books on Break program, as well as on the families that come into the office every day. The joy I’ve been able to see in children’s faces and expressions when they hear the words “free books” has made me even further excited for my summer with Book Harvest, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store.
¡Hola a todos! Mi nombre es Rachel Zawadzki y estoy muy entusiasmada de ser una pasante en Book Harvest este verano. Acabo de terminar mi segundo año en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte de Chapel Hill (UNC), y estoy cursando grados de bachiller en Literatura Comparativa y Español. En UNC, estoy muy involucrada en el “Campus Y”, el centro de justicia social de UNC. Cuando encontré este puesto de pasante, me di cuenta que era la combinación de mis pasiones — literatura y justicia social.
Una de las cosas que me encanta de Book Harvest es la manera en la que apoya a los jóvenes lectores. Book Harvest les da los instrumentos para aprender y crecer. En mi corto tiempo (alrededor de una semana) aquí, ya he tenido la oportunidad de ver el impacto de los libros en niños a través del programa de Books on Break, y también en las familias que vienen a la oficina cada día. La alegría que he visto en las caras y en las expresiones de los niños cuando escuchan las palabras “libros gratis” me ha emocionado mucho y no puedo esperar a ver qué más voy a experimentar en mi verano en Book Harvest.
