Kai Hill

Literacy Coach
Start Date: February 2024

As Literacy Coach, Kai Hill (they/them) partners with families in creating a home literacy environment during their children’s earliest years of life. Kai's academic background in African, African-American, and African Diaspora Studies, with a BA from UNC-Chapel Hill, combined with over 12 years of experience as a trained language justice worker and interpreter in English, Spanish, and French, allows them to connect with families from a variety of backgrounds.

They've also worked as an oral history intern, facilitating civil rights workshops in middle schools in the Triangle. Their interest in oral history also took them to Northeastern Brazil to conduct an oral history project on Afro-Brazilian culture, history, and art. They later worked as a high school teaching assistant in Reunion Island, a French Department in the Indian Ocean, and also as a trip leader, guiding middle school students through the rain forests and towns of Costa Rica. Their passion for storytelling and cultural exploration fuels their desire to create just, inclusive and engaging literacy experiences for all children.

Their favorite children’s book is The Lorax by Dr. Seuss and they love reading, the outdoors, and discovering new music.
