With Literacy and Justice for All:
Book Harvest’s Bold Vision for 2025-2027
For 14 years, Book Harvest has been on a mission to ensure that every child grows up with a home library brimming with books. Now, with its 2025-2027 Strategic Plan, we are taking this vision nationwide—transforming children’s literacy through book ownership from birth and over the first decade of life.
A Future Where Every Child Thrives
A Plan Rooted in Urgency and Impact
The statistics are stark: a child’s access to books profoundly impacts their literacy, yet too many children lack the home libraries that fuel lifelong learning. Recognizing that literacy is a fundamental right, Book Harvest is doubling down on our efforts to make book ownership the norm, not the exception.
Scaling Book Ownership for All
At the heart of the plan are two transformative initiatives:
-
Books from Birth for All: Partnering with hospitals to provide every newborn with a starter home library of 10 board books, helping parents establish early reading routines and build a culture of literacy from day one.
-
Books on Break for All: Ensuring that every K-5 student in participating school districts selects 10 books to take home for summer reading, combating learning loss and nurturing their identities as readers.
By 2030, we aim for these programs to be universally adopted, setting the stage for a nationwide standard of care that prioritizes book ownership as an essential element of childhood development.
Building Capacity for Sustainable Growth
To realize these ambitions, we are investing in organizational capacity through:
-
Revenue generation: Diversifying funding streams to ensure financial sustainability.
-
Talent recruitment and retention: Attracting top professionals committed to the mission.
-
Program refinement: Enhancing operational efficiencies to maximize impact.
-
Strengthening our flagship community in Durham: Building capacity and ensuring the long-term sustainability of programs that serve as a model for nationwide expansion.
Advocacy and Thought Leadership
We are engaging with local, state, and national leaders to push for systemic support for book ownership initiatives. Through research, storytelling, and strategic partnerships, we are working to make universal literacy a public priority.
